During the minor surgical procedure, the insertion area is first numbed, and then an applicator guides the hormone implant into place. Immediately after the procedure, you and your healthcare provider will feel for NEXPLANON birth control to ensure it is inserted correctly. The insertion of the device takes less than 10 minutes.
It is important to feel for the implant to ensure that it is inserted correctly. If it was not inserted or inserted too deeply, it could lead to problems or unwanted pregnancy. For 24 hours after insertion, you will need to wear a pressure bandage to ensure proper healing at the site. An adhesive bandage will remain in place for three days. Finally, you will receive a user card that notes the insertion date and expected removal date (3 years after insertion). Keep this with your medical records.
Before the end of the third year after insertion, simply book an appointment to remove the NEXPLANON implant. This will also require a minor surgical procedure. You may become pregnant as early as one week after removal, so be sure to start another birth control method right away if you do not want to get pregnant. It is an option to have NEXPLANON replaced with a new device on the same day of removal if you wish to continue with this contraceptive.
